Legit gaming ips?

Postby rev » Wed Feb 04, 2015 2:59 pm

Curious what people think about this. Is ips a viable fast twitch gaming monitor at 120 hz now? $450 isn't that bad.. I believe I paid around $400 for my Asus two years ago.

I haven't read enough about IPS monitors to give proper feedback but if you want the monitor for FPS gaming, I think you still want a TN panel. Not 100% on it. Not sure if the response times have caught up yet.

From what I know, IPS looks nicer and has deeper better color contrasts, but TN is for higher ms. TN is cheaper as well to make so that's higher profit margin for the manufacturers. If you can get high ms (~5ms or less) and high hz (120hz or higher), then IPS is better buy.

The IPS monitor you listed has 6ms and 120hz. Honestly, that's very good. I know I said you want 5ms, but I guess 6ms is good enough. It is not 144hz ofc but 120hz should be fine.. expensive tho :?

I think IPS will eventually replace TN though. It is just nicer, cleaner and crispier graphics, but they need to improve on the ms and hz across the board before it becomes ideal for gaming. For now, you want TN but IPS is the future.

Right, so that's what I'm curious what people think about. Has ips (specifically this model) improved enough so that its a viable option over tn? The response time on this model is 6 ms.

6 ms isn't great. My old 120hz Samsung was rated at 5ms, my 144hz Asus is rated at 1ms, and there's definitely a noticeable difference.

Most of the time, the manufacturer ratings are higher than what you get in practice, also.

The Eizo Foris FG2421 is a 120hz IPS that's rated at 1ms, and is considered to be the best gaming ips you can buy right now. However, most review sites found that the average response time was 9ms, with spikes of up to 44ms at times. The input lag was around 30ms average.

For comparison, digitalversus measured the Asus vg248qe to have a very consistent average 4ms response time and 10ms input lag, the lowest of any monitor they've ever reviewed (slightly lower than the comparable BenQ even). I think the Asus is still the best gaming monitor you can get.

That 6ms is the pixel response time, not input lag, by the way. So IPS monitors have more motion blur (6ms vs 1 ms) and more input lag, which is usually not specified by the manufacturer, but there are sites out there that do input lag tests on them. I'd say get the TN, but you probably won't notice TOO much of a difference with IPS.
