d1sc vs RickJames

The opening match of the tournament was between d1sc and RickJames. This was an extremely difficult first round matchup for RickJames however he managed to put up a respectable fight (unlike his last 1v1 showing).

Rick jumped out to an early lead on Sph3res while Rick-detractors and Euro-lovers were questioning reality and pulling their hair out.. Rick's Cinderella story ended at about 7:42 pm EST and he was unable to wear his dancing shoes until midnight. At the 5 minute mark, d1sc evened things up on Sph3res and asserted control to finish off the map.

Codex was a different story as d1sc maintained the lead from start to finish. The final score was 19-9 and while the game was "close", the powerup control, aim and knowledge of d1sc was too much and the better player won. Both players had self-inflicted wounds on Codex. d1sc let go of his button early and Rick found out that bleh hates The Offspring.

ShatteredX vs InfamousRaider

The second match of the night was a duel between ShatteredX and InfamousRaider. This is one of my favorite duels from the whole tournament. There were ups, there were downs.. there was goo, there was suicides and there was also showmanship during a really close game.

The first map played between these glorious gladiators was the Duel Edition of Turbine. The map was picked by ShatteredX and much to his dismay, his first comment when he entered the server was, "who cut off half of the map?" We all had a nice chuckle as Shat re-familiarized himself with a UT classic. I mentioned earlier that this was one of my favorite matches and that is mostly because of Turbine. The players see-sawed back and forth in the early stages of the game however Shat was able to edge out a miniscule lead. This was partly due to the fact that InfamousRaider rocketed himself (not one but TWICE) and because Shat was swagging with the goo and IR showed no self-restraint with devouring green loads (not once but TWICE). The dying minutes of the game were ridiculously intense as IR was on the hunt and close to evening up the score and as the final seconds were ticking away, IR was frantically pursuing the game tying frag and missed it by about 2 seconds. Shat had slightly better pup control (55/45) but this game could have easily been won by the InfamousRaider.

The next map played was Codex. InfamousRaider tried to brute force the game with his aim but SavvyX was too clever to fall into that trap. The game was relatively close for the first half but Shat suffocated the will to live out of IR. Weapon of choice for IR was the Sniper with 6 kills and the weapon of choice for Shat was the flak as he used it to mow down InfamousRaider 17 times. Big props to IR for stepping up and filling in and additional props to Shat for putting on a great show.

SunnY vs Linoleum

The final match of the opening night was one of the funniest slaughterhouses I have ever seen. After trying to explain the elimination system to Lino, he started singing Dancing Queen before I cut him off and told him it was a different ABBA.

Malevolence was the first map played and it was extremely forgettable. SunnY jumped out to an early lead and pulverized his iCTF teammate with the sniper rifle. I offered Lino "mercy" since it was clear that the first map was decided within the first few minutes but Lino was more than comfortable being a target for SunnY's archery practice.

I was expecting another snoozefest on map two but it ended up having some hilarious moments. AutoPause debacles, slime swan dives and Deck insanity. Lino put up more of a fight but SunnY still managed to win fairly easily. I have a grin from ear to ear whenever I go back and watch the highlights from this game. Props to Lino for participating and congrats to SunnY for his dominant performance.

Fun fact: SunnY controlled all of the boots and all of the belts on Deck16.

HuMPtY vs kud

Continuing the theme of iCTF teammates matching up, the kudster took on the garebear and it was an awesome duel. A lot of people don't remember but HuMPtY played a lot of weapons back in the day. He knows how to duel and has had plenty of experience playing with high ping. Kud also has some dueling practice and while he picked up weapons in the later stages of UT, he has been a gibber at heart.

The first map of the game was Turbine. Not eliminating this map was the first mistake of the game for kud since it has been well documented that this is one of HuMPtY's best if not best map. Despite the removal of the flak hallway, HuMPtY handled the changes like a pro and dominated map one. Powerup control was fairly even on the armor and the pads however belt engagements were controlled by HuMPtY (73% of belts).

After the convincing route on Turbine, it was looking like this match could easily be a two mapper. This was not the case as the shirt came off and kud started flexing his muscles on Sph3res. HuMPtY kept it close for the first 3 minutes but from then on, it was the kud show as he amassed an impressive 32-8 win. Belt control was even and powerups were not the difference maker.. kud just put on his big boy pants and went man-mode with his aim. Both players put up strong performances on their selected maps and the winner would be decided on Agony..

Unlike maps one and two, the tiebreaker in this game was not a decisive win. HuMPtY jumped out to an early lead but kud dug his heels in the ground and equalized the game at 6 around the 9 minute mark. From this point onward, HuMPtY won a few engagements and was able to nurse his small lead. The game would not be over until the fat lady sang and she started crooning as HuMPtY pistoned to the ledge above the minigun. Belt control leaned in favor of HuMPtY (67%) and this edge was likely the difference maker on Agony. Great game and a great duel from two classy members from the OwnedWell community.

n0b vs Rummy

The highly anticipated n0b vs Rummy showdown turned into a quick two map throwdown. The first map was Malevolence and the last thing that Rummy said to me on TS was that he would, "play more passive." Rummy lied as n0b opened the game up with a godlike in the first 5 minutes. For Rummy's sake, map one was not highlighted and instead, we start from map two.

Map two was more interesting as n0b wrestled with a ping of 207. The final score was 24-12 and there was some nice back and forth between the two players. n0b was a VERY difficult first round matchup for whoever he was going to play against and we thank Rummy for stepping into the ring with him.

Quote of the match:
"Rummy is aiming at the ceiling for some reason." -mrgrins (meanwhile n0b headshots him)

blackout vs JYB

blackout and JYB were two of the stronger play-in candidates and with a blood feud spanning several years, everyone was expecting an epic match. Unfortunately, this did not come to fruition since while JYB is talented, blackout is even more talented. Codex was complete destruction as blackout won 33-5 and Phobos did not get any prettier and blackout tapdanced his way to a 30-1 victory. The belt/boots/armor was all dominated by blackout and JYB was left with measly pads as he was hunted over the course of 15 minutes.

PACO vs mrgrins

In the most highly anticipated and least scheduled match of all time, THEINCREDIBLEPACO took on dear-friend and nemesis mrgrins. If you are looking for extremely high level player, skip a bit further ahead in this post but if you want to watch a fun matchup, checkout this game.

The first map of the game was Malevolence. I had been practicing it during the week with n0b and despite being godliked on several occasions, I figured it would be a decent map to play against mrgrins. I was wrong. I made a few pushes at the wrong moments and I was punished for my questionable decision making.. mrgrins did a better job controlling armor and pads and walked away with a 17-8 victory.

The next map was Phobos and if you are going to watch any of the maps.. WATCH THIS ONE! Not just because I won it but there was some really fun action/shots. The game started terribly for me as I spawned at the armor/boots. I grabbed the boots and missed the dodge. I play BT. I was mortified. mrgrins started with the early lead but I have the heart of a champion and I fought my way back into the map. bleh was skeptical about some of my decision making but I taught him why he should never doubt me. Phobos went to PACO and it was onto the Codex.

The final map in this clash of titans was Codex and mrgrins once again jumped out to an early lead. There were some really close engagements but the man with the golden voice who isn't homeless nor from Cleveland proved that he was too much to handle. The map ended 14-4 and the better man (that day) won. The weapons kill breakdown showed that mrgrins was more potent with the flak/shock while PACO was doing most of his damage with rockets.

rootsoft vs dev

The final play-in of the tournament was between rootsoft aka Mr. Reliability and dev aka Mr. TDM. In hindsight, both of them made the wrong selection with their map picks and this battle turned into a three mapper. The first map played was Deck16 and it was selected by dev. Rootsoft is often called a "one-map-wonder" and apparently no one debriefed dev when he won the coinflip. As expected, rootsoft was strong on Deck. He held the lead from start to finish and had slightly better powerup control. Both players did most of their damage with the shock and sniper (no surprise) but rootsoft did a better job and it paid dividends. root had a ping advantage but dev surprisingly averaged a 90 ping connecting all of the way from the UK.

Codex followed Deck and it was looking like it might be a two mapper. Just as we were giving rootsoft praise for being able to play two maps, he collapsed in spectacular fashion. He was winning for the first 9 minutes of the map and was unable to land a frag in the final 6. Root did a lot of damage with the Flak Cannon but dev was superb with the Shock Rifle hitting a nice mix of combos and primary shots. The map ended with a rampage from dev and a whimper from root.

The decider was Malevolence and rootsoft was able to redeem himself. Armor control was even and dev actually managed to get two more sets of pads putting the powerup graphs in his favor. The key to this map was the Flak Cannon. Both players did good damage with the hitscan weapons but Flak is particularly important on a map like Malevolence and root made dev pay the ultimate price.. a spot in the second round. GGs to both of these fine participants.
