Our first official rescheduled match of the season was a great one between HULKSMASH and csn. Week one might have given Throw Em an idea that the Alchys were weak on Peak and they decided not to mess around and go straight for the throat. In theory, this game should have been a blowout however theory went straight out of the window at 2:00pm EST this past Saturday.

Throw Em has a very strong team with kud rounding it out as the team's solid 4th man. He has been dubbed as Mr. Reliable with his gameplay and his punctuality. Punctuality be damned, this man slept through the first 10mins of Peak and gave his team a real scare. Luckily, pwnage was around and he was able to keep it close.

One of the interesting matchups was a duel between HuMPtY and csn in the middle. HuMPtY is a Peak-mid specialty player and has a strong history of dominating the point. csn on the other hand has been one of the most rapidly improving players and gave Cro a scare on mid last week as he basically drew the point with him. csn was able to keep up the momentum and pummeled HuMPtY..

Image

101-77 is a very decisive win and it might be time for HULKSMASH to panic over these Gold Nova performances from one of her star players.

The Low matchup was definitely why Throw Em opted to pick Peak. Xenoscythe took a drubbing from PACO in Week 1 and his fortunes were not about to improve vs Rummy. -41 in Week 1, -66 in Week 2 and if he keeps up at this rate, he might be -91 Week 3. csn needs to re-evaluate positions or go over Low strats with Xeno. Aiming and killing aren't the problem as he is shooting very respectably but his point tagging is too slow and he is being cannibalized by faster players.

With a decent win mid and a catastrophe low, csn needed rain and paleface to dominate the top. Initially they were paired against blackout and pwnage and they were able to create some decent separation. Around 2:10pm EST, kud decided to wake up and pwnage tagged him into the ring. The rain and pale combo was still able to display dominance however kud was able to make it a hair closer. In a game that comes down to the wire.. that hair counts. In the dying minutes of the game, both teams were neck and neck while csn's team had the advantage with the amp. Rain was putting in work exerting immense amounts of pressure on two points and all he had to do was stay alive. The team would have performed one of the biggest upsets of the season but instead they created one of the funniest highlights I have ever seen.

If this was the NBA, rain would be center stage and starring on Shaqtin' A Fool. Even Javale McGee can't believe it..

Image

At least it only happened once. Anyways, wonky dodges aside.. it was a great performance from both sides and it was one of the most exciting sDOM matches so far this season. It was a missed opportunity for csn but pushing Throw Em to their limits on one of their stronger maps shows that they will not be easy pickings for future teams.

The second map in this matinee matchup was Typhoon and it was a strong pick from csn. Typhoon is a frag heavy map with and csn has some of the heaviest fraggers in the league.

Hideout is the middle point on Typhoon. It is one of the more tactical points in sDOM and it can be extremely frustrating when a player loses control. Often enough you will see a team place their best player at this point in the hopes of blowing the game open against a weaker opponent or just trying to keep their head above water against an equally matched player. In this case, Rummy went up against rain for the first portion of the game and it was not pretty. Rummy was having a rough time and rain was controlling the tempo by outfragging Rummy and by taking Armor off of the table (24 Armor pickups from rain). Throw Em needed to switch blackout with Rummy and it was a great swap that changed the dynamics of the game. blackout did a better job matching up with rain and the powerup distribution was a lot more even.

The Ledge point which is the high point was originally a faceoff between blackout/kud and paleface/xeno. Rummy obviously switched halfway through however it was a close battle for most of the game with both teams seesawing up and down the total point graphs. The Ledge point typically controls amps however neither team was able to muster any runs and neither team was able to survive for more than 10 seconds or impact the game in any way. Ledge was a +22 victory which offset the loss at Hideout.

The game was ultimately decided down low between HuMPtY and csn. For the first portion of the map, the two were neck and neck but as time went on.. HuMPtY was able to settle down and assert his will on the point.

Image

The +16 margin was enough to secure a map victory and HuMPtY was promptly upgraded to the Master Guardian rank. The Alchy's had the lead for portions of the game and if it wasn't for a tactical swap mid-map from the opposition, they could have easily walked away with the W. It was a gutsy performance and they get some PACO Props as a reward for their tough loss.

The Dentists were considered to be one of the preseason favorites however after a Week 1 stumble, they were coming into this match with their backs against the wall. A Less Than Three win could have easily spelled the end of their season so the pressure was on Monk to pick a map and perform. The tooth collectors decided to pick Olden and I don't think that anyone could have predicted one of the upsets on the map..

Mid was a complete slugfest between Morpheus and RAVONIX. These two heavy hitters were up and down for the whole 20 minutes and constantly at each others throats. Not only did they have a very difficult point to tag and control but they both were able to disrupt the players trying to move through high. RAVONIX gets a slight nod in his favor but Morph kept it more than respectable and only lost by 6 points.

The high point was a face-off between Monk/Ulo and Viperz/FALLACY. One of the reasons that Monk picked this map is that it is a tough one to play if a player is inexperienced and FALLACY is about as green as the grass at Pebble Beach. This map was targeted towards FALLACY however it looked like it could have been a major miscalculation from Monk.

Image

Despite obviously being lost at times, FALLACY was able to help Viperz control the high point for the first half of the game. Monk didn't get his first DOM points until about 3 minutes in and the situation was looking real dire for The Dentists. Red team's fortunes increased exponentially as more time passed. They went from losing, to being tied and eventually pulled away for a solid margin of victory in the last few minutes of the game. With wins at the Mid and Upper points, it was up to snkypoo to defeat LaG|RickJames on the Lower point.

Image

If this was CSGOLounge.. there would be a full investigation and skins would be refunded. Luckily there is no virtual currency to bet in UT99 or snkypoo might have had a lynch mob circling his house. Rick "Da Boi" James beat snky by a whopping 51 points while outfragging him 80-59. A draw for snky would have been seen as a loss to many people (although it would have been enough for a map win), however snkypoo showed us his versatility by acting out the roles of the Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion all in one cataclysmically terrible performance. Rick has been chest pumping which might lead to some salary bumping in future seasons. snkypoo on the other hand has a meeting with the board of directors..

Image

UTStats: http://www.ownedwell.com/utstats/?p=match&mid=10766

After losing another map pick, things were not looking good for The Dentists. Team Rick had picked Tempest and they had the opportunity to close out the match on their own map pick. Tempest is a map where an amp can blow open a game or at the very least it can dictate the tempo. With players like Monk and snky on the other team, it seemed like a shaky pick however Less Than Three might have been gameplanning for the Low point instead of High Perch.

Low point was a complete slaughterhouse. Morpheus was paired up against ulo and he used his fragging and smarts to keep ulo off of the dom point. The fragging disparity was 104-60 and the point margin was even larger as Morpheus racked up a 50 poinr advantage. It is not clear whether ulo opted not to go for belts or if Morpheus simply did an amazing job taking them off of the map. The game finished with Morpheus taking 12 of the 14 available belts and ulo taking none of them. In the past, Low has sometimes been seen as a throwaway point however from the matches that we have seen this season, some teams were winning there by a much larger margin than High Perch.

The Armor point was a battle between RAVONIX and FALLACY. Armor is seen by many as a "frag dummy" point however with some of the new strategies on Tempest, Armor can be a very important point. It is no surprise that each team placed heavy hitters to contest for this middle point. RAVONIX was taking the Armor off of the table at a 7:5 rate and this advantage surely helped to play a part in him winning by 26 points. FALLACY did a decent job of keeping up with FRAGONIX for the first portion of the game but sDOM is a marathon and he tapered off at the end. A 26 point advantage was a start for offsetting the 50 point deficit down low but it meant that Monk/snky would have to clutch the top or face a match loss.

The battle for High Perch was much like the battle for the top on Olden with Monk's team starting with an early deficit. I imagine that snkypoo was visibly shaken to see that he was once again paired up with Rick "The Destroyer" James however it appears that he was able to shake the nerves. snky had a bounce back map and notched 84 dom points.. almost as many as Rick and Viperz combined. Both teams had their fair share of boots however only The Dentists were able to make it to UTStats with amp runs that lasted for more than 10 seconds.

Image

Despite controlling most of the amps, The Dentists did not make Less Than Three pay the price until a final 6 point swing from Monk helped give his team some cushion. Monk started -9 with his first two runs but was able to get in the positives by going +12 in his final two attempts.

Image

Less Than Three had the lead for a decent portion of the map and almost made this a two mapper. Their inability to close the deal sent this match to BloodRun and kept The Dentists' playoff hopes alive.

Image

UTStats: http://www.ownedwell.com/utstats/?p=match&mid=10769

The tiebreaker map in week two was BloodRun. This was originally a Quake map however it was recreated from scratch by Swiftshade and there are some modifications to help it run smoother in UT99. The map has three interesting points and there is no shortage of eye candy. Some players took the time to learn the map and others didn't. This reflected on the final box scores.

RAVONIX and FALLACY squared off once again and this time it was on the Low point. The Low point is very frag heavy and it seemed suited to both players however RAVONIX displayed sheer dominance. Low can sometimes be hectic if teams make a concerted effort to pour through it but neither player had too much assistance. RAVONIX killed FALLACY 94-60 and nearly doubled his dom points on the low point by winning 122-64. This was a huge and unexpected margin and a hole this big down low is nearly impossible to fill.

Image

While Low was a loss for Less Than Three, the Lava point was a swing in the other direction. snky was once again matched up with his rival LaG|RickJames and was once again outfragged by his new nemesis (32-28). The Dentists were applying more pressure to the high point and sacrificing snky to the wolves on Lava. Belt control went in favor of Less Than Three at a 2:1 ratio however 5 of the 7 amps taken in the game went to Monk. This was a huge difference maker because Monk was able to strike gold and went on a crazy tear on one of his runs. Godlike runs have been few and far between so far this season but Monk managed to notch one for his team when it mattered most (also almost went Godlike earlier in the dev on the same map but ran out of time).

Image

This +39 amp run combined with the large disparity down low was more than enough for The Dentists to run away with the map. It appears that The Dentists put more focus on controlling the High point (which can be a nightmare to take back), while sacrificing snky to double teams at Lava. This was a winning strategy and after a shaky start, The Dentists left week 2 with a win in their pocket.

[Special kud feature for the Mike FTW vs Ampbition Recap. Big thanks and an enjoyable read!]

MikeFTW were looking looking to stop the bleeding after having their hearts crushed in week 1 by Less Than Three. Ampbition on the other hand must've bought dental insurance before the season because they were looking pretty after their appointment with The Dentists in week 1. MikeFTW were looking more like the Dentists' victims as their lineup was missing something like the front row of a hockey player's chompers.

Image

First map, Nitro was picked by MikeFTW; the choice surely influenced by their captain Miracle's aptitude on the Flow point. Despite miracle coming in huge and winning a 35 point matchup against MP5 (subbing pete) on flow, they still ended up losing the map by 43 with a final score of 337-294.

The lead was lost early and harshly in the 6th minute when Ampbition netted 20~ points over the Mikes and never gave them back. Most of those points came off the back of bug/knockoutdad who incredibly managed to mug the Mikes for 12 points on corner in a quick 60 seconds. Bug has been in complete beast mode lately, trouncing supreme on corner earlier on match day, who in turn had been raising the hackles of JYB in his own match.

Bertha was another loss for the Mikes with Sauron coming out +29 points and +11 frags on dewsick. Sauron continuing to impress and show what difference practice can make. Kudos to Dewsick for being available to sub in on such short notice. n0b managed to stop a little of the bleeding on Bertha, but they still lost the point by 23.

Image

tl;dr: No answer to bug on corner.

Image

UTStats: http://www.ownedwell.com/utstats/?p=match&mid=10773

Second map was Seraphim and picked by Ampbition. It was a back and forth game with big gains scattered from start to finish for both teams. In the end Ampbition clamped on to the final 5 minutes and made the win happen.

Image

MikeFTW took a win on the top point with Lockpick/Dewsick beating MP5/Knockoutdad 106-92. Ampbition staying true to their namesake and grabbing the majority of the amps. Knockoutdad in particular had a 1:22 amp run that would've been very disconcerting. MP5 played his part by dominating belt control with 10 belts, while also lending aid to bug on the middle point.
Middle point was the clash of the powerhouses as n0b went up against bug (and MP5). n0b showed great powerup control nabbing 17 armours to bug's 8, and also 7 kegs to bug's 0. n0b outfragged bug 77-55, but MP5 made his presence known by taking 7 armours and landing 24 kills on n0b. In the end the combined pressure from MP5/bug brought the point into Ampbition's favour 104-92.

Low point was highly contested between Miracle and Sauron. In the end Sauron had slightly more acc, slightly higher eff, slightly longer TTL, slightly more kills, and simply more DOM points. It wasn't until the last 5 minutes that Sauron decisively brought the point into Ampbition's favour 100-80 and contributed to the late game surge that gave them the 2nd map and the match win.
tl;dr: teamwork on middle and clutched low.

The first map selected in this matchup was Tempest and it was a selection from The Super Cows. The rationale behind it was that JYB/PACO would be able to dominate the High Perch, Cro should win Armor easily enough and risus wouldn't lose Low by enough to damage the team. The selection ultimately worked out but there were some surprises along the way.

The Armor matchup was a battle between Cromaniac and Supreme. Cromaniac has about +$500 on Supreme in the salary department but player values can fluctuate throughout a season and it looks like Supreme is making an argument to be the next $1500 player.

Image

The Armor point was no easy picks for The Cows and Supreme actually lead Cromaniac for a fair portion of the map. It wasn't until the amps started applying more pressure to Armor that Cro was able to get his head above water and narrowly win the point with a photo finish. Supreme virtually drawing Cro did not bode well for The Cows but there were still 2 points remaining to determine the fate of the map.

The Low point as expected was a battle between Risus and Sens. Risus has been a solid 4th man who has shown immense amounts of potential but this was an extremely tough draw for him. Sens has many specialty points and this is one of them. Neither player was very concerned about taking the belt but Sens was able to win the point by 30+ with a stronger shooting performance and better positioning. There are many angles to play and Risus was simply outclassed. With a 30 point hole down low and Cromaniac drawing Supreme, there was a lot of work to be done on the High Perch.

The High Perch used to be a solo point and it could singlehandedly blow a game open. These days it has become a double team point and on this matchup, JYB/PACO squared off against ramdrop/ScReaM. The trick to winning High Perch is to control the boots and the amp. The team that has more success controlling these powerups should ultimately win the point.

Image
Image
Image

PACO is known to be a bit of a fashionista and apparently he refused to be seen in the same pair of boots twice. By taking 20 of them off the table and his assistant JYB taking 5, ScReaM and ramdrop were refused service for most of the map as they walked around in their bare feet.

The amps were also dominated by The Cows and The Bunnies took an absolute pummeling.

Image

THB is no stranger to getting blown out on the high point of a map. Last week it was Seraphim and this week it was Tempest. The Cows won their point by an incredible 73 point margin. JYB had a 6 and a half minute amp run where he demoralized THB by going Godlike in the first 3 minutes and surviving for an extra 3 to rub salt in the wound. This long amp run secured a lead for The Cows but it wasn't until PACO unleashed 2 minutes of amp fury that the game was completely broken open. In just 2 minutes, PACO netted a +22 margin for his team and after that, there was no looking back. Ladies take notice.. PACO can work wonders in under 2 minutes.

Image

UTStats: http://www.ownedwell.com/utstats/?p=match&mid=10772

The second map was Nitro and it was selected by THB. The Cows were popping champagne since initially they were considering this as a map pick.

The hardest point to control on the map is Bertha and it is typically reserved for a team's best fragger. In this situation, it was Cromaniac up against Sens with ScReaM and PACO floating to provide assistance for their team. This is one of Cromaniac's best maps however Sens is no slouch and he actually managed to outfrag Cro. If it was strictly a 1v1 point, Sens would have likely won Bertha by a pinch but PACO impacted the point enough for Cro to win by a 10 point buffer.

While the top fraggers will typically play Bertha, occasionally a top player will specialize on Flow. In this case it was ramdrop and this Brit has a reputation for wreaking havoc on this corner of the map. The Cows opted to send Risus up against ramdrop and they were factoring wins at Bertha and Corner to offset the loss at Flow. At the start of the game, The Cows were thinking that anywhere in the ballpark of -25 would be an acceptable loss and that the remaining players should be able to make up the difference.

Image

Unfortunately for The Cows.. ramdrop went big and slammed a +41 differential on Risus and put his team in a great position to succeed. Part of the blame can be assigned to PACO who should have spent more time at Flow but hindsight is 20/20 and no one could have predicted what would happen at corner.

The corner matchup was between JYB and Supreme and it was one that The Cows hoped would offset the Flow position. JYB is one of the top-dawg-sick-mu-truckas in the league and he has been on point all season. He was up against Supreme who had surprisingly went toe to toe with Cro on Tempest and he managed to keep his hot streak alive on Nitro. Despite being heavily doubled by PACO and JYB, Supreme managed to keep the Corner point extremely close and deny a lot of amp opportunities for The Cows. THB ended up with 5 amps to MSC's 4 and despite the fact that their 5 amps were fairly ineffective, they removed the potential of JYB to blow the game open.

The match was close initially with THB jumping out to an early lead and MSC catching up and taking a lead of their own halfway through. At this point Supreme went man-mode and rampaged without the amp. He also shot in the neighborhood of 60+ acc during this stretch and it was a momentum changer in THB's favor.

The Bunnies shocked The Cows and forced a third map in an important match with heavy playoff implications.

Image

UTStats: http://www.ownedwell.com/utstats/?p=match&mid=10774

The final and deciding map of this match was BloodRun. People are still working out where they should play certain people, where to run with amps and what the best routes are to get to different points. Coming into this map, The Cows had a gameplan (minus Risus who learned the map in warmup mode).

The High point is arguably the most difficult point to re-take and once again Cromaniac was slotted to fight with Sens. Both players had some help from JYB and ScReaM however Cro was able to get some revenge and blew the point open for The Super Cows.

Image

The High point had the largest margin of victory as the red team comfortably sat on a 45 point cushion. Cro maintained a 60+ efficiency for the duration of the map and Sens transformed into a wandering vagabond as he abandoned high for portions of the game to try and impact other areas of the map. The keg control was also heavily in favor of The Cows and Cro ingested 10 of them. If this was a party, Cro would be considered a terrible host.

The Lava point was the throwaway point for The Cows coming into the match and it was lucky that they drew Supreme on a point that they were not that worried about. PACO tagged the Lava point when he could and made sure that he was in position to disrupt amp boosts and land amp boosts when they were needed. Despite losing the point, The Cows were still able to control 5/7 amps taken in the game. Supreme went hard once again but this time.. it wasn't enough.

Risus and ramdrop duked it out over the Low point. This was a surprising spot to play ramdrop since it seemed like a waste of his fragging and amp potential. With the Flow beatdown fresh in his memory, Risus channeled an inner-rage that he hadn't felt since starting the Photoshop a dick on PACO's head thread. A win down low was not expected but Risus actually won the point by +26 vs one of the best fraggers in the league. While he didn't do it by himself (his boys had his back), it was nonetheless an impressive performance and a way to redeem himself for his past performances. Rushing and flooding the Low point was always part of the gameplan for The Cows and The Bunnies seemed dreadfully unprepared to counter the Mooves and rotations.

The 3 points from winning Nitro were enough to keep THB in the playoff race but they will need everything to go right for them this weekend and they will need one of Throw Em or MSC to stumble.

This concludes the Week 2 recap. I would like to thank kud for spending the time to recap one of the matches. This sDOM season has been a lot of fun and we have seen some really high quality matchups. I'm looking forward to recapping the rest of the tournament.

nice read

I actually won by one point vs Ravonix even though he had a disgusting 20 point streak at the end. I lost the point in utstats cause monk is a scumbag. In the SS i won :OWgrinsgasm:

They were better and we picked badly imho. They also did so it worked out nicely. You failed to mention this was the playoff match, and i'm glad it was streamed! GJ Grins

I really hope we go to playoffs because i want to play more exciting sDOM matches (iCTF sux atm), but only 50% go...we have to work for it xD

GG paco and good write up. As for our match: Tempest- Risus was hitting way too much on me on that 1v1, god! Shooting me as I take the upper healthpack 3-4 different times before I touch it - Hows that timing or angle even on? Bloodrun was a washout with a bad map for our respective positions. Not a good one with a lack of preparation, players not playing the ideal spots for their style and again similar to week1 maybe not quite the right routing or tactic either. Glad to never see this map again though..

Very good read. Tempest was a massacre at high perch. I kept thinking "no worries, they'll get jyb eventually" but eventually came too late. Bloodrun was a map we haven't practiced much, as seen by the number of failed boosts we had. I knew I could play the lava point, and it looks very similar to corner on Nitro. What I didn't realize was Bloodrun is sort of a Tempest clone in disguise, where the high point is difficult to retake. And once again, we got completely dominated on another high point without finding a way to stop the bleeding :o . At least no godlike from jyb this time, as we kept a lot of amps away from him, including one where he cratered after getting it  . But yeah, never felt so out game planned in a match before. Will be interesting to see if we can rebound on the 2v2 points this week and prepare for a tiebreaker this time.
