Hi guys!

You may or not remember the saCTF power ups discussion we had last year on Global Unreal regarding having an saCTF league with... power ups!!!



While the discussion being quite evenly divided and receiving 46% yes power ups!!! to 54% no change votes , there were quite a handful of people that seemed really enthusiastic about the idea. Main reasons for it was: giving the CTF gameplay more dimension than just fragging, like it is in instagib.

Although ultimately we decided not to go through with it, this was more due to time constraints of being able to edit maps and test them than being opposed to the idea. So this time around, I thought I'd start the discussion a little earlier, so we can actually make it happen if we want to!

Yes- belt, amp, keg, vials

Maps will all have to be modified, and just a few should be added to each map. Finding the right implmentaions is the hard part. You can't just stick all of the above at mid on duku and expect it to play nice, obviously.

An amp in the standard location at mid on bleak would be nice. Maybe a belt at high mid on ec2, vials in the low hallways. Just throwing ideas out there. The point is to find a way to make powerups useful but not op and to integrate them into a map's flow.

Also, not all maps need to have powerups. I can't think of a good way to implement them on duku or some of the faster and smaller maps, because the best way to use them there would be to defend or play mid. Too easy for defenders to grab them without getting way out of position, and you'd just get swarmed and fallen back on attacking with a stack or amp on small/fast maps. You want to use them to speed the meta up, not make it more turtley or give players more of an incentive to chase or play mid.

All the powerups. Add a translocator and impact hammer. Add in the rocket launcher, flak cannon, shock rifle, enforcer, goo, pulse, mini, ripper.

Edit: In all seriousness, saCTF with powerups sounds awesome.

While I get your point m3ss, I gotta disagree with your perspective comparing it to nwCTF

I feel an instagib/shockdom/sniper player could play sniper ctf with a few extra powerups (and learn their timing), but it's impossible to a. play reg weapons given geographical/ping reasons and b. learn how to use translocator, impact hammer, rocket launcher, flak cannon, enforcer, goo, pulse, mini and ripper if you haven't been playing it for years already.

I thought it was silly not to have power ups.

You guys had to ween some instagibbers into sactf though. Don't bother with that tele nonsense unless we're talking weapons. Impact hammer though, that might be cool, could make grendel less of a shit fest.

How about relics? The times i played publics with relics were good times, loved the speed or death/suicide bomb relic f.e.

About the original question: i dont mind belt/amp/vials etc. I also wouldn't mind to get rid of the existing powerups instead, let people battle it out with 100hp and (f.e.) 20 bullets. I'm not much of a sniper player but on a map like sprinta @ defense i can keep stacking up (pads, healthpacks, armor) so one solution could be to give belt/amp to attackers while another would be to remove healthpacks/pads/armor.

iv played sactf for like 10 years without powerups but if the bigger part of the people want them im fine with.
just keep the powerups like they are and dont change them to sdom style with healthpack always 100 and amp forever etc.

wouldnt care to edit maps with powerups added or replaced for a sniper league

I would certainly play this. Although i don't think it's necessary to add power ups due to it detracting from the fun of the teamplay. It's such a well designed game that flags are generally well fought for, covered, dropped, picked up struggled back to base. A shield belt or amp would just add an advantage that would unbalance the game. Maybe i'm wrong, haven't played with powerups since like 2007. i can see that it would add a talking point for streamers and tactical depth with timings etc that could make for better viewing.
My only issue, which i don't think many people agree with, is that newnet in SA doesn't work properly. Personally (not suggesting it) i would rather play on an American server with ZP. SA was all about the pace, accuracy and the 'snap', it's lost that a little and seems more pot luck now.. I'm pretty convinced of this, i did play nothing but SA from 2002 till 2011. Ran popular servers and leagues, played more pugs in UGN than anyone else by a country mile. ;)
All that aside, i'd love to play this 'mod' in a tournament, if you guys/gals would put the thing together i'd be most pleased! :P

What could go wrong xD Amp definitely not infinite. Idea of some relics sounds fun, but it also might be to chaotic and distracting. Oh well, always up for experimenting

don't care so long as it isn't newnet sniper

really doesn't matter at this point, why not try it

i'm happy to play with powerups because i can vail/pad/armor whore all the live long day, when we had an active scene things went better without powerups but this is mostly because it felt like you were playing on pub

one guy(usually me) would stack everything and the game would become boring for the guys who didn't know how to manage powerups

knowing how to count up and survive that extra shot can give someone a huge advantage in saCTF, much more so than say sdom
