Modified 1v1 Maps for Upcoming 1v1 Tournament

A potential 1v1 tournament is on the horizon for both Europe and North America. Chances are that the map selection will be different per region, but a while back me and mintek made some slight modifications to some maps. Personally, I am strongly in favor of having these maps implemented into competitive play.

EDIT: This isn't my tournament nor has this been decided. It's simply a discussion on if we should use maps with improved spawns. For example, is seven spawns next to a shield belt a good thing or bad thing? Discuss.

EDIT 2: It should also be known that the vast majority of spawns stayed in the same spots. If they were moved, it was by a matter of feet.

The minor map tweaks include:
Codex-GUDM (deleted two spawns underneath armor, kept the spawn by shock lift).
Agony-GUDM (modified from the MLDM version with has less vial density and deleted several spawns by shield belt).
Malevolence-GUDM (moved spawns in the middle of rooms into more discreet corners)
Deck-GUDM (reduced sniper ammo by 50%).
Spheres-GUDM (Sezco needed music added to the map).

Major map tweaks.
Curse-GUDM (added an armor room, moved vials to bottom, deleted bad lift spawn, moved thighpads).
Turbine-GUDM (sealed off entire flak area, deleted most water spawns, moved belt to bridge, move armor to old belt location, moved thighpads to top vent).

Other maps:
Phobos-MLDM (same version played in MLDM).
DM-Terra (heavily play tested, final version has 2 portals).

Potential map tweaks:
DM-Liandri (ph34r has suggested deleting entire sniper stairs, moving vials to bottom of map, putting sniper in redeemer room and switching shock/pulse. Spawn tweaks would also be ideal). This map in its current state has proven to be poor for 1v1 (MLDM Div1 and Div2 are prime examples of that).

Feel free to play test these maps and give your opinion.

you guys don't understand that the community is in such state that changing the content only damages it further. There is simply no hope for ut99. Stop making this fucking changes already! These changes could be the utopia for UT99 but no one will fucking even look at them. 70% of people that will potentially sign up wont even practice it. Ye the 3/4 guys contending will and 10 other guys too but others won't.

For me its a major turnoff and any tournament that keeps this kind of m.o. will not see my sign up.

I'll be announcing more information in the next week or two.There is a major tournament on the horizon. Discussing maps is a good start.

Codex-GUDM: Removed spawns break the flow at armor, picking up spawn kills there is one way to maintain control. Original codex is flawless
Agony-GUDM: Agony-MLDM was fine with just the removed vials, as was original agony. Taking out spawns by belt (the most important ones to control) sounds map-breaking. Again, not a map that you want to change.
Malevolence-GUDM: Slightly moved spawns doesn't sound like it affects anything, sure whatever floats your boat as long as it doesn't force different spawns than usual
Deck-GUDM: No, this is reg, this map should never be altered

Curse-GUDM: Unplayable in both this form and original- It's a big, low scoring map with a top area that's accessible by 2 lifts only. You'd have to do more than add an armor room and change spawns to make this playable.
Turbine-GUDM: The last modified version I saw was horrendous, I mean deleting entire sections and limiting routes on an already really predictable map. I love turbine, but don't think it's suitable in any form for a 1v1 tourney.

Phobos-MLDM: Great mod, don't think it's one of the stronger maps (still kinda slow), but no issue with it
DM-Terra: "heavily play tested"? By who, 2 people? I'd like to see the latest version and play it, but past ones were really slow playing.

DM-Liandri: I agree that it's bad for a tourney. I always thought that it could be fixed just by sealing off redeemer room, deleting sniper hallway (force piston to sniper), and adding 3 vials by sniper (maybe even make the platform a little bit bigger). It's a classic, though, and certainly some will argue for the original.

tldr: Don't use any of these except maybe malevolence-gudm and phobos-gudm. Terra might have potential in latest form. mldm version of agony is fine. Perhaps mod liandri or remove altogether

Im not sure map inputs should come from someone that rage quit against TSM in the only tournament match of his duel career.

Also only one spawn was removed from agony armor room if i remember. There is 1 by the shock, one was under the ramp and the one removed was on the ramp. Like sly said people are giving epic way too much credit if you believe they actually planned for map flow of any kind lol. Load up agony in UED and unless you are a total idiot, youll understand what i mean.

I also laugh at your protest to remove 50% sniper ammo pack on deck... really you need 6 of them? 2 guns and 3 pack is not enough for a duel map?

Look if you wanna get buttfucked by bleh, it doesent matter if the maps are changed or not rick. The changes are only done so that once 2 competent player fight the flow is better, like in agony. If you actually believe more spawn should be around that belt ramp then the rest of agony rooms combined, im glad you werent picked for UT4 community event at epic studio.

Use the map or dont, but please stop talking like you and epic game from 1999 actually knew what map flow is at all. You wouldnt know map flow even if it hits you in the face with a crowbar.

I don't mind the changes to spawn points. I agree it is totally unacceptable to win a duel and the person spawns right beside you. It is bad for both players. If you still have a good amount of health, it becomes spawn rape. If you are low health, it becomes easy pistol kill for the other guy. Making it where you spawn to the farthest spawn from the player would make it more strategic and less luck / spawn rape. So fix the spawns all you want in that regard.

BUT, My problem comes in when you start taking out sections of maps and start reworking where weapons are. This completely changes maps that have been used and played the same way for 15 years. Keep all that the same. Even if there are valid reasons, it is too late in the game to start making these changes (especially to the greatest map ever made, Liandri).

Rickjames is like TheWhiteDragon on Epic's forums when it comes to this 1v1 conversation. He's so adamant about not making changes to the maps, but I am not sure why he is so passionate about it. He has never played at the top level.

Ok you have swayed me, because I wouldn't want 1-0 snooze fests either. People want the action. So what could be done to change it? Taking the stairs out and Redeemer room out would be fine. This would help keep duels around mid, armor, and belt. Not too keen on switching pulse and shock, but I'm all for something being done. As much as I hate to see it change, that map is just too classic to be omitted totally.

Hmm, after thinking for a bit I guess I don't mind Shock and Pulse being switched if Sniper is in the Deemer place. Usually one person spawns by belt and the other by armor, and now one will have Shock while the other Sniper.

Is there any chance of people being interested in the 1v1 version of Terra that was made a few years ago? I personally thought it was a great addition to a dull maplist. Duel competitions seem to revolve around Deck, Codex, and Agony and any addition in my eyes is a bonus. Even Spheres as much as it's slated could do with some tweaking of spawns to make it a better map in terms of spawn balance. In regards to the GUDM edits, I personally didn't think they made the maps any worse than they already were, as mintek stated, in terms of map flow I don't think they were originally designed with the level of play 15 years later in mind and some of them had serious chokeholds that could be abused. Deck should remain the same though, possibility of playing TDM gametype in duel would benefit some of the concerns raised by people in this thread (not sure if that's been discussed haven't read every post yet).

I kinda agree with your point of view bleh. The list is small and a little more maps in a 15 years old game doesent hurt at all. If a player wouldnt play a new map in a tournament, they arent the kind of players we should have on public streams to promote competitive gaming to begin with. 1on1-Terra is solid from what we tested, i believe giving it a few try before the tournament with some good players could be a good start. Personally i wont reopen the map to edit anything, but if you guys want to change anything to get the map played in your tournament, go for it.
