Instagib & UT4

Postby SaReVoK » Sun Sep 21, 2014 12:09 am

GU/Owned Well is the only remaining UT community left, involved with instagib.

I hereby call on Paco and his minions to put pressure on Epic to, for once, take instagib seriously.
I know m3ss has already been to Epic HQ. (Did you mention instagib at all?)

UT99, UT2k3, UT2k4 & UT3 never got any attention from Epic when it came to instagib.
Yet, instagib (iCTF) was always the most popular game type in all the UT games.
Its time Epic devoted at least a small amount of attention to it. We deserve this!

I do now know what Paco & Co. could do exactly to inspire Epic to do more for instagib this time around.
One thing that definitely would help is start posting in the Epic forum [].
I have seen only one thread that even mentions instagib over there so far. There should be a lot more.
Just keep it clean and friendly over there. Or Epic won't listen to anything you have to say.

Also, I think coming as a community (GU) should carry some clout that might sway some minds @ Epic to take instagib a bit more seriously than what they've done in the past.

One thing I do think is in the interest of us all - and perhaps especially Owned Well - is the lack of client-side hit detection which UT4 is about to be born with.
If you want Owned Well to be anything like GU (Global), then we need something like NewNet for UT4.
I don't know what happened to Tim. But just imagine what could be done if Tim and Epic stuck their minds together and came up with something NewNet-like for UT4.
If we want a global instagib community, no better way to get that started than having UT4 born with something like NewNet.
Otherwise, its back to EU vs EU, NA vs NA, Oceania vs nobody, SA vs nobody etc etc.

At moment, BU is the only community('ish) having any influence on UT4. But they don't give a hoot about instagib, and therefore care as little about client-side hit detection as Epic do at the moment. GU/Owned Well could make a big difference, and change the fate of instagib in UT4.

What say you? Shall we make this a global community or not!?

Instagib sucks so who cares.

But on netcode, I hope for the same. Right now I have my suspicions Steve isn't going for either NN-style or client side hit detection netcode.. but remote player prediction. At least, right now if you stand still scoped in with the sniper, the game predicts enemy positions for you and places a white hitbox in the place it thinks they will be by the time your shot reaches the server. Steve was also worried about implementing higher strafe speeds (accel/decel) and this would indeed have a large effect on this style of netcode.

Also to be honest i don't think they paid attention to UT99 ig. It just so happened to fit perfectly within the game.

Happy to see people who still likes instagib :D

If really Epic listen the community, insta players will want a polished instagib mod and competitive maps. Map modders will do great maps too.
Some people would like UT2k4 maps with vehicles and some stuff but hardcore gamers put their mind in competitive instagib maps based on 5vs5.
Instagib was one of the most important competitive game modes (Clanbase times with Nations and Euro cups) and I believe a lot of people still want to revive old instagib competitive games. If ZeroPing comes with the game it will be great too!

We believe the new UT will be great and we would thank to Paco and all the people who is trying to get involved in the development of a great game.

I will support instagib and competitive modes for sure!

I got in to UT because it came on a demo cd along with quake, possibly tribes, and some RTS. I casually messed around playing both quake and UT, but UT quickly became a landslide favourite after discovering public ictf-coret servers (okay, so before that I was playing shock arena against bots on DM-Morpheus, but that wasn't a popular gametype lol). I played with 150+ ping servers before I knew what ping actually was. It was difficult, but rewarding, and accessible despite being a 12 year old who'd never played a FPS. I truly believe IG will be the canary-in-a-coal-mine for UT4.
