Leagues are what were keeping interest in the game imo, once they stopped running leagues the pugging went away with it. I'm very confident that if they'd at least try starting a new league, we could bring this game back to life. Definitely think it's worth a try.

There is no interest because there isn't a league, there isn't a league because there is no interest.

Agree with Ryan. If there were leagues and tournaments, there would be plenty of interest. The admins pretty much just let things die down. Its a good time of the year to start something up. No football on Sundays after the super bowl, and winter keeps people indoors.

No doubt, I don't blame you for wanting to do other things with your time. Just saying that's the cause. I've been playing and learning CS:GO in my free gaming time. I'd likely play in UT events though.

Activity has been stagnant for so long that anyone who starts something up is going to need to heavily promote on both networks as well as find mailing lists for UT-based forums or old league sites. It will take some work and simply saying "If you build it, they will come" isn't entirely true. This ain't no Field of Dreams.

I have a decent list + access to mass e-mail from this forum. Sauron has access to ProU. In the past, reaching out to people was always problematic and one of the major hurdles however in this instance.. I think that people know this exists, they just aren't interested.

It's 2016. Who wants to sit around on IRC waiting for hours to play a game when they can launch a host of other games up and get immediately into the action? How can you compete with that? This game needed critical mass (which it had 2 years ago) where you could catch a pug every 20-30mins. The community fractured due to the shortsightedness of some and here we are today.

For the people craving UT action, hit up #UT4.eu. They are running a draft cup and seem to have some decent pug activity. Personally, I'm not too enamored with how the new game feels but a sizable portion of the old guard seem to enjoy it.

If there's enough interest, I could make a public iCTF/iTDM server with #ipug settings and a maplist of pug maps and some of the better pub maps. Basically an alternative to the uk servers with no andaction/control/woot/etc that isn't constantly full. I think it's the best hope of anyone who wants to play UT, you aren't getting another league any time soon.

I'm willing to help in any way I can, I think it's worth at least trying. I really do feel if we open a new iCTF league, open signups and spread the word we can keep our game alive. Anything I can do to help get things up and running please let me know.

I don't even login in to IRC anymore because every time I do the channel is completely dead. I used to be on IRC because people would at least be having conversations in the downtime, but they don't anymore.

People used to say UT99 is dead before but this time it really has met its death. I don't think you can fix it at this point but 1999 - 2015 (realistically 2014) was a good run.

There are about 90 people idling in #ipug right now. At the very least we can get a few pugs going.

Fellows, it's a losing endeavor at this point to somehow rein in activity in UT. It was great fun while it lasted, but it is time to wrap it up. We have seen the best years of UT behind and had a lot of fun, but now the great veil curtains have parted. The show must go on in other games with UT remaining in our hearts and minds of yesteryear. Cheers. ;)

Just to reiterate

We need SOMEONE to take a LEAD. ANYONE.

People want to help out but no one wants to take the league organizer position.

What about doing something like a 2v2 tournament that doesn't need many players(if there is even enough for that anymore).

The only pug players that I see(remember) in the pubs regularly now is just rapture, nordog, scream, and unrealshots, don't even see the PrT players, jyb, and co that were in them regularly before.

If this indeed is the end, I better say it now...

Thank you to all that were involved in keeping the competitive scene around for so long. 16 years is a pretty long time and I know for sure I could fire up UT now and still have fun.

The beauty of the Unreal Tournament 99 game is unmatched and the longevity of it rivals any game that I have ever played in my years of gaming.

What impressed me the most was the display of passion put forth in running the ut99 tournaments. From the free agent scouting reports (ph34r), to the pre-match predictions, live streams (m3ss/grins/paco), post-match recaps, map making (windigo/khemz/others), IT support/newnet (n0b/Tim), and addition of an advanced big data stat page, these forms of content brought entertainment to an age old game.

Additionally, the graphics, website, and social media content (chica/scott) certainly provided an aesthetically pleasing way of bringing most of the content together.

Even the continous grind of keeping the game clean was amazing to witness. The countless snips that were compiled, slowed down, and recompiled (windigo/others) of trying to prove players cheated down to the very last pixel, was down right entertaining. I say entertaining because it seemed like watching a soap opera unfold with the convicted trying very hard to play it off.

On the other side of the spectrum, it was also great to witness people who fought for their integrity of their name after being wrongfully accused (fallacy/nick).

All in all, while I am sure 80% of you players hate me for being nomic on 70% of the pugs I played or just don't know me, I have enjoyed competing against all you players from around the globe. It has certainly been quite the experience and I wish you all the best!

OPEN YOUR EYES!!!

A KOTR would be quite successful still. I have no doubt of that, at least.
