Hi.

The cherry switches are basically how a key responds to keypress. There's different types, which are louder/stiffer and others that are softer and easier to press. There is no real 'best' option - it's more a matter of personal preference.

You can get 'try out' kits @ amazon to see which one you like best. Bit pricey maybe, but probably better to know what type you like before buying a KB and regretting it later. http://www.amazon.com/Max-Keyboard-Keyc ... y+switches

Cherry MX Red - Soft Linear 45g actuation force - Smooth, no tactile bump. The Cherry MX Red is a lighter variant of the Cherry MX Black linear switch.

Cherry MX Black - Firm Linear 60g actuation force - Smooth, no tactile bump, The Cherry MX Black is a stiffer variant of the Cherry MX Red linear switch.

Cherry MX Blue - Tactile & Clicky 50g actuation force - Tactile and clicky switch. You can feel the tactile bump and hear the "click" that occurs when the activation point is hit.

Cherry MX Brown - Soft Tactile 45g actuation force - Softer and lighter tactile bump, no click. The tactile point is much less pronounced.

This is similar to what I use (mine is the RK-9100, older version) For the price you can't beat it and it's a great keyboard imo. Definitely worth it for your first mechanical. I've had no problems with mine and have had it for a few years now.

The only benefit a gaming keyboard has is its looks. If you want to spend 100$ + on a keyboard that lights up and makes lots of noise with a brand name on it, then get one!

I'm a huge fan of the Logitech G710+. I played on one for the first time at the first Epic Community Event and immediately bought one once I got home. It has excellent feel without being overly loud compared to other mechanical keyboards. Plus it can double as a bludgeoning weapon in a pinch. The thing is extremely heavy/robust.

Boguth Corsair k70 with cherry red switches (first cherry red keyboard) when it was 80 dollars on amazon. Keep an eye out, they usually drop in price but doubt it'll go that low again.

Without a question the best keyboard for under $300 at $130 shipped I got it at.

Now if you want to stick to $100 budget then get what m3ss/paco have. Logitech G710+.. Very good keyboard

Also why are you buying the coverage plan? Drop it if you can. Waste of money as you already get 3 full year warranty with the keyboard. You are better off spending the extra money on an even better keyboard. Corsair K70 at $130. It is sturdier and aluminum build as opposed to the Logitech G710+ which is mostly plastic.

There are many a suitable mechanical keyboards these days. I have several and for gaming I recommend Cherry Brown switches. I've tried Blacks and after a few months I was getting numbness in the tips of my fingers from the feeling of the key every time it bottoms out since they're linear and have no feedback. I have a Corsair K95 I won at Epic Games and it's great but the keys are bit too close together. My Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Stealth 2014 feels better and is spaced apart better - gets my vote. It also doesn't have a ridiculous amount of macro keys on the left side.

No need to get very defensive over it as if you are a Razer employee

-Razer always had pretty bad quality over the many years. I find it truly interesting that you would mention Thermaltake's inferior quality to make Razer look good, but I will let it pass
-As far as Kailh vs MX Cherry, you answered your own question. Same design but inferior material. Kailh makes all of their switches so I do not know what would separate Razer from the rest if Kailh manufactures those switches. Yes, it is possible that Kailh uses different facility specifically for Razer products, but if that were the case, wouldn't Razer be better off just making their own switches instead of going through Kailh & paying them commission to make it for them? These switch designs are not rocket-science & the patents expired years ago as you said. It wouldn't cost Razer very much to get their own designs made
-You can usually tell the difference in feel & consistency of the switches if you do A/B testing. I don't own the Blackwidow so ofc I cannot do A/B testing. If you watch some reviews though, you will see mentions of Blackwidow's quality being plasticy & cheap for that cost.
-Ultimate is $130 on Amazon - same or more as other better keyboard using true MX Cherry. You would think that the price would be lower for the customers with Razer using the cheaper Kailh, but no. Razer probably pockets the extra - If you look around, they don't even openly admit to using Kailh switches anywhere on their site or reports. You have to pull off the key & look at the symbol underneath the keys to see a Kailh symbol and put 1 & 1 together. Shady?

Wow, you still going on with this. I guess you work for Razer, are a Razer fanboy, or hate being wrong.

Here, I admit:
-Razer makes higher quality products than Logitech, Microsoft, Steelseries, Corsair, everyone. Razer has almost no quality assurance issues.
-Kailh is better or equally good as MX Cherry. You're right.
-Razer makes their own special switches that are not really Kailh even though they have Kailh symbol on them.
-Even if Razer used Kailh switches, Razer's switches would be better because Razer uses them & not some other company
-Razer's the best,
