GAMER PALM

Postby PACO » Mon May 04, 2015 1:07 pm

Am I the only one in this community who suffers from this affliction?

Image

I always thought it was pretty standard that gamers have this and it started becoming noticeable on me even back in the UT demo days. When I game a lot, it gets bigger and when I'm afk it will get smaller but it never fully disappears. I remember seeing a dude with the exact same thing at a party in college and I went up to him and asked him what game he played.. he asked how I knew he was a gamer and I held my palm up to him and we bro'd out and shared a moment..

FLASH FORWARD to a week ago where I mentioned it on TS and roughly 4-5 people told me that I'm weird and that they don't have it.. This leads me to the question.. is Gamer Palm common in this community or have I been deceiving my fiancee that it is a badge of honor worn by all real PC gamers?

I am eagerly awaiting responses..

Ahh, a classic case of Ventroposy. It's spread through contact with vermin and desert rodents who scourge the plains of de_dust.

Let this be a warning to all you fellow gamers... once you lower your standards to CS:GOGO dancing, you pick up all sorts of unwanted venereal diseases. Don't worry you'll live. Maybe.

I used to get that in the early 00's from setups where my wrist was close to or on the edge of the desk. It was just like a callus you'd get from gripping weights.

I'd say find a mousepad big enough to allow your wrist to rest on it. If that's already the case, dat sux.

seems like bad ergonomics to me, though. I use logitech mice, and try to position the bottom of my palm on the backslope of the mouse so my wrist is straight and not angled sharply/dragging on the desk. If you're still using that chair you made in 8th grade shop class try putting some phonebooks under the legs; raising the height might make you less likely to drag your wrist

Looks like slight inflammation. My educated non-doctor guess is that you get that from overuse when your wrist/hand rubs against the mouse pad or table too much for extensive periods of gaming.

I would try what Drew-tang said.. Keep your hand elevated so it doesn't rub too much against the mouse pad or your table when gaming. Maybe try slightly higher mouse sensitivity so you don't have to move your hand around as much - I dunno if you use very low mouse sens but very low mouse sens tends to cause more hand stress as you have to move your hand around much more.

Truthfully, it does not seem like something you have to worry about, but just change how you position your hand & body while gaming to limit the hand/arm stress. I used to have hand pain issues myself (I still do and always will but it's due to different muscle issues than you) - I simply moved away from fast-paced games like UT. The pain significantly lessened, but like I said, it's a WHOLE different level of issue that was getting worse.

It's the glass. Rubs/pushes against your wrist. When you're zoned into gaming, you lose track of how hard you're pushing down against it..

Simple Solution: Get a thicker mouse-pad to give you more padding. Or just tie around some gauze pad or something around your wrist.

I don't have that, many people don't, but i know someone who has it, it has nothing to do with the glass because my friend has it and hes on wood, his is way worse cause he games all the time. But it does reduce when you stop playing. But unfortunately it doesn't go away as far as i know.

Fix that chair, or turn in to Chubbs.

Get a real chair friend. :OWgrinsgasm:

I used to get this when I played WoW for 28 hours a day 9 days a week in a 10$ chair from Walmart. It's the friction on the mousepad combined with the angle you have your wrists/arms and the amount of pressure you apply in a downward manner while doing the swipes. Get a chair with adjustable armrests, drop them when you FPS and raise them when you're doing the RTS/MOBA games, net browsing, admin duties, etc. More than likely will still have one for a while.

It's all in your head, I don't see anything.. That was no bro moment in that dimly lit college party.. He thought it was an icebreaker.. Let me guess, he ended the interaction with "What's your steam name maybe we can hangout next weekend?".

He has a patch of shiny calloused skin on the bottom of his hand from doing sweeps in csgo. Before that it was CTF-Coret in demo :OWfacepalm:
