Unreal Engine 4 - The greatest 'fake' realism ever?

I was pretty impressed by this demo.. Is this how Halife 5, Crysis 10 and UT-2020 will look like? Imagine being Gordon Freeman and running around with a crowbar through rooms like these cutting down aliens.

Here if you want to try it out (It says Paris but I think you run around in that apartment):

That ue4 Paris demo runs at 130 fps on my gtx980. So seeing graphics like that in full games isn't far off at all. It's very possible that we could see some similar amazing stuff in UT4.

Hard to believe how quickly technology evolves. This is what I would call exponential growth..

I remember I used to think GTA 3 graphics were mind-boggling in 02.. Look at where we are now since 02.. I cannot even begin to fathom where we will be in next 10 years.. Just imagine the band of growth from 02 to 14 - now consider 14 to 26. I don't believe the improvement will be at the same scale. The ratio of improvement will begin to flatten much like Moore's Law has already started to with transistors..

Has anyone tried The Vanishing of Ethan Carter? Gorgeous game, it's enjoyable to just walk around in.

Sometimes though, I just want the game to look like a game. Borderlands hit the mark in this regard. It really depends on the game and what they're trying to accomplish. Many games sacrifice "realism" in their graphics if it doesn't fit their style. Blizzard has never been a headliner in the graphics department, other than their cinematic intros and mid-game cuts, but their games are consistently worth buying since the original Warcraft. A game doesn't require the best graphics to be a joy to play. In fact I would take a hit in the graphics if it means they spent some of those funds on good plot writing and solid voice acting.

Some games do require the realistic graphics to give you the immersion needed to make you continue playing. The most recent Wolfenstein comes to mind. :OWfacepalm:

We have the ability to make games which look better, but the on screen clutter and lackluster art direction is most games just make it all look bland and repetitive

Loads of games are 90% grey, all the colour is in the hud and there's almost ZERO artistic flair present
